Portfolio

On this online portfolio you won't find all the projects I've ever worked on, but you will find those that I deem most interesting. The main purpose of this portfolio is to give you an example of my capabilities, not to supply you with a complete overview of my work. If you have questions as a result of viewing this portfolio or wish to contact me, then you can do so by emailing me at steven [AT] sethorian [DOT] net.

Moodle Statistics / ASM Intranet

During my employment at ASM, I got to work on a large variety of webbased applications. Two of the most noteworthy projects in regard of programming and design were the development of a statistics application as well as designing a first draft of the new intranet layout.

The statistics application generated table graphs from user course completion data from the Moodle Course Management System.

The new intranet layout was made in Photoshop with the intention on becoming the company's new Sharepoint intranet website layout. While not implemented at the time, it serves primarily as an implementation goal for my possible successor.

Technologies used: (X)HTML, CSS, Javascript, ASP.NET 2.0, VB.NET, IIS, MSSQL, MySQL & Photoshop CS2.

Serpentes backup software

While a hobby project, started in 2006, I continued my development on it in active bursts, followed by long pauses. Gradually I completed its first version (1.0), soon followed by two patch versions (1.1 & 1.2). Currently I'm gradually working on version 2.0.

The primary goal of this project was to improve myself as a programmer. A goal which I think succeeded.

Version 2.0 will have, among other features; backup profiles, incremental backups and a help function.

Technologies used: Java (J2SE) & HTML.

Mobile game

For an as-of-yet undisclosed project I got the opportunity to create a mobile phone game. Working in a team of three, we thought up a concept, wrote the necessary documentation and I programmed the game and did its concept art work. Eventually, an internal alpha version was created that comprised four minigames; two quizzes, one simple maze (to be expanded at a later stage) and a shooter.

Technologies used: Java (J2ME) & Photoshop.

Graphic design

As drawing and graphical design are hobbies of mine, I regularly try to find good excuses to apply my skills in these areas. On your right you can see various projects on which I've done just that. The examples vary from website and folder design to excerpts from my personal webcomic.

Technologies used: Various, but mostly Photoshop. In case of web designs; (X)HTML, CSS & Javascript.

Starlabs (game design)

For years I worked on my own 'mod' (short for modification; typically it refers to an user-created expansion for an existing video game). Based on the videogame Half-Life, I conceptualized, formed a team and for four years, worked on creating my own videogame. I did all the level design, writing and various small jobs. Other team members did texture work, website design, sound effects, voice acting, modeling, UV mapping, etc.

After four years the mod didn't reach the form which I wanted it to and the project was cancelled. One year later, however, I would still release one chapter as part of another mod called Reissues. Titled Starlabs: Satellite Trouble, this 4 level spanning episode was, judging on fan reviews and feedback, a success. What else could I have hoped for?

Technologies used: Various, but most importantly Valve Hammer Editor (formerly known as Worldcraft) & Photoshop.
